Description:
Sentinel Surveillance is the most efficient way to collect timely and good quality data normally carried out with the indicator-based surveillance and includes collecting data from a limited number of surveillance sites in a systematic and routine manner. Objective: Epidemiologically characterize the Serious Acute Respiratory Infection in the Department of Cesar according to the databases of the Sentinel Surveillance that lie in the Department's Public Health Laboratory. Materials and methods: a descriptive study was carried out based on the retrospective data, the data collection was carried out through the review of the clinical histories and the LSPC epidemiological files that met the inclusion criteria during the study. Results: We analyzed 1,260 medical records of patients with a diagnosis of SARI. The 9.01% corresponded to cases of severe acute respiratory infection, the most affected age group was in children under five years (38.32%), the highest frequency of cases was reported by Valledupar with 75.3% (948 cases) respectively; the respiratory Syncytial virus caused 42.1% for the year 2014, 64.2% for the year 2015, 49.7% for the 2016, and 30.2% for the 2017 being the most frequent virus of the cases positive, Respectively. Conclusion: Acute respiratory infection is one of the most important public health events in the department of Cesar and is one of the main causes of hospitalization in children under five and over 60 years old.
