The aim of this study was to describe a literature review on the latest trends in food packaging industry in the national and international market. It was shown the concepts of active and intelligent packages, as well as their functions, composition and the design of packaging, the chemical reactions involved, the particular behavior of some types of packages, applications and benefits of their use in the food industry. These packages are planned and allow interactions with food in a desirable way in order to maintain the quality, integrity, freshness and safety of the packaged product. These technological innovations are already well established and accepted in some countries, providing benefits to the conservation of a great variety of foods. In Brazil they are emerging technologies that are being adapted to the national market and developed through the research of new mechanisms that can be used for many applications. 28 1 69 84
