Resumen
This paper reports the antioxidant activity of a tropical fruit juice and its antiproliferative and antimutagenic effects. The antioxidant activity was determined by several different methods, such as ORAC, ABTS, PSC (peroxyl radical scavenging capacity) and CAA (cellular antioxidant activity). The total of phenolics and flavonoids were determined, and the phenolic compounds were identified by LC-DAD-ESI-MS. The juice showed high total phenolic and flavonoid contents (838.44±30.27g GAE/100g and 219.45±12.27mg CE/100g DW, respectively). According to the PSC, CAA, ABTS and ORAC assays, the tropical fruit juice showed a high antioxidant value of 308.39±3.10μM AEE/100g, 26.76±4.47μM QE/100g, 167.17±4.10μMTE/g DW and 235.90±11.90μMTE/g DW, respectively. The proliferation of HepG2 was significantly inhibited, in a dose-dependent manner, by exposure to the tropical fruit juice. Antimutagenic activity was investigated by micronucleous test in mice, and all doses evaluated (30, 100 and 300mg/kg b.w.) showed beneficial effects. As a consequence, these results encourage further studies on the pharmacological and functional properties of this tropical fruit juice, in order to evaluate its use as a functional food, due to its beneficial health properties. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. 59 2P2 1319 1324 Adom, K.K., Liu, R.H., Rapid peroxyl radical scavenging capacity (PSC) assay for assessing both hydrophilic and lipophilic antioxidants (2005) Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, 53, pp. 6572-6580 Brito, E.S., Araujo, M.C.P., Alves, R.A., Carkeet, C., Clevidence, B.A., Novotny, J.A., Anthocyanins present in selected tropical fruits: acerola, jambolão, jussara and guajiru (2007) Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, 55, pp. 9389-9394 Dewanto, V., Wu, X., Liu, R.H., Processed sweet corn has higher antioxidant activity (2002) Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, 50, pp. 4959-4964 Felice, D.L., Sun, J., Liu, R.H., Amodified methylene blue assay for accurate cell counting (2009) Journal of Functional Foods, 1, pp. 109-118 Frontela-Saseta, C., López-Nicolás, R., González-Bermúdez, C.A., Peso-Echarri, P., Ros-Berruezo, G., Martínez-Graciá, C., Evaluation of antioxidant activity and antiproliferative effect of fruit juices enriched with pycnogenol® in colon carcinoma cells.
