Organic food production has been growing in recent years; however, these systems require inputs that are free of chemical pesticides and provide environmental, social and economic benefits. Obtaining organic seeds in Brazil is one of the main obstacles in this sector, and research is needed that points out suitable inputs to this cropping system. Among the tools for the search for more sustainable systems are Effective Microorganisms (EM). However, there are few literature about mechanisms of action of this product and its use for the treatment of seeds. Considering the hypothesis that EM can be used for the organic production of maize (Zea mays L.), this work had the objective of studying the effects of EM formulations in the treatment of maize seeds with a view to improving sanitary and physiological quality. Three different sources were tested: one commercial (EMCOM) and two from family farmers, one from Montes Claros - MG (EMCE) and another from Viçosa - MG (EMMA). EM were filtered in order to exclude the microorganisms, using only the secondary metabolites produced in the fermentation process. In the first assay the EM were tested separately, where corn seeds were soaked for 30 min in four concentrations (1%, 2%, 5%, 100%) of EM in two versions (filtered and unfiltered), besides the embedded control in distilled water, totaling nine treatments arranged in a completely randomized design. After five days of incubation, the presence of phytopathogenic fungi in the seeds was quantified. In the second experiment the maize seeds were soaked for 30 min in the three EM and their filtered versions, without dilution, besides the additional fungicide treatment Derosal Plus and the control, totaling eight treatments in a completely randomized design. Seeds were followed for blotter test, germination test and first count, emergency sand test and emergency speed index, fresh and dry weight of seedlings. In the third treatment, 42 fungi isolated from corn seeds treated with EM were evaluated in a culture test paired with Fusarium verticillioides, evaluating the diameters of the colonies. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design, with three replications. Corn seeds with lower incidences of phytopathogenic fungi were observed at concentrations without dilution of EM, demonstrating that the mechanism of action of mixed - culture microorganisms also results from the production of secondary metabolites containing antimicrobial substances. In the comparative experiments to the fungicide, all EM showed efficiency equivalent to Derosal Plus, without affecting the physiological quality of the seeds, without interfering in the germination nor the emergence of the corn. However, the seeds treated with EM presented seedlings with higher fresh and dry mass, compared to the control and the fungicide. Of the 42 isolates obtained from corn seeds, 21 showed the ability to inhibit the mycelial growth of F. verticillioides with percentages of inhibition between 46 and four percent. Different mechanisms of antagonism were observed, but mainly by competition and antibiosis. In general, all EM tested were efficient in the control of maize seed pathogens and without impairing their physiological quality. EM has a mechanism of action closely linked to secondary metabolites produced via anaerobic fermentation and may potentially replace chemicals in the treatment of maize.
