A bibliographic research was carried out, using as source the information and data of research institutions, of private and national reference companies focused on the livestock market. The activity of calf production is the basis that sustains the other productive stages in livestock production by supplying animals destined for rearing and fattening, but it is an activity with greater productive and economic challenges. The slaughter of females is determinant in the future supply of calves, between 2012 and 2013, the increase in the proportion of cows sent to slaughter caused great concern to technicians and cattle ranchers, a period that was known by the term ‘Calf Production Blackout’. From this the adoption of the real plan in 1994 identifies three livestock cycles, the market of the beef calf is directed by the market of the ox, incorporating a premium or discount according to the phase the cycle, that is, the prices of the calf both, fall more and increases more according to the price of the bullock . The exchange ratio between a fat ox and weaned calf has been narrowing over the years, influenced by the increase in the productive indexes of livestock.
