Resumen
The proper management of solid waste is a problem present in most municipalities in the country.
Approximately one third of the municipalities in the country carry out selective collection, sending
many of the materials with the potential for reuse or recycling to sanitary landfills or dumps.
Despite the mandatory disposal of waste in sanitary landfills established by the National Solid
Waste Policy (PNRS), many municipalities still do not carry out proper disposal, which can cause
environmental degradation and sanitation/public health problems, which is why it is necessary to
establish instruments adequate management and control. This study aimed to analyze solid waste
management data from the three capitals of the southern region of Brazil. From the analysis of the
data National Information System on Solid Waste Management (SINIR), it was observed that the
southern region of the country and its capitals stand out in relation to the collection of waste in
their municipalities and the adequate disposal in sanitary landfills, however, they present a low
percentage of recovery of the material collected selectively. Thus, the importance of municipalities
adopting more effective public solid waste management practices to avoid the destination of their
waste with potential for use in sanitary landfills, as provided for in the PNRS, is corroborated.
