Desempenho The current research analyzed data on the differences in student’s performance
between quotaholders and non-quotaholders students of the psychology course in
Universidade Federal da Bahia (UFBA). Three indicators of student learning were
considered: vestibular’s score, score in a statistics’ subject and the performance
coefficient (PC). Based on these variables, the study examined the sociodemographic
determinants associated with the differences, exploring the comparison between the
students who entered the university through the vacancy’s reservation and the group
of students who entered through the universal selection system. The analyzes were
conducted using IBM SPSS 22 software. The study included the information of 517
university’s students who joined in 2005.1 through 2012.1. The main conclusions of
the research revealed a lower performance of students who entered in the university
through vacancy’s reserve for all indicators, with the greatest distinctions found for the
vestibular’s and for the statistic’s score. In addition, it was observed the existence of
students with different social, economic and cultural characteristics within the group of
quotaholders, a factor that contributed to variations in the results in all the analyzed
indicators: the older and richer quotaholders, with higher monthly family income, had
a superior performance than other quota holders, with lower family income. Multiple
linear regressions’ results showed that the fact of being a quotaholder influenced in
7% of the variance and raised the chances of obtaining an increase of 0.596 point of
the grade in statistics. Predictors gender, personal internet access and quotas were
responsible for the explanation of 39.5% of the results’ variance for the PC. The fact
of not being a quotaholder increased the chances of adding 0.244 points to the PC,
while being female and having access to the internet increased by 0.229 points each.
Despite the limitations in analyzed students’ number and the lack of graduation
process’ informations, the article’s conclusions should encourage similar scientific
work which investigate with due caution the student differences – ethnic, social or
academic differences – for the proposition or the development of educational
management policies.
