ABSTRACT: This research arises from the question about the scope and limitations of the work of the
educational psychologist in formal institutions of basic education in the city of Medellin. It
was developed using the State-of-the-art methodology proposed by María Eumelia
Galeano, in which the information is obtained from primary documentary sources and it is
complemented with secondary sources; the first ones include the entire bibliographic and
documentary sample; and the second ones include the register of observation visits to
formal institutions of basic education in the city of Medellin and the information offered by
psychologists from each of these educational institutions through the implementation of a
semi-structured interview.
The general objective was to do a state-of-the-art about the work of the psychologist in the
field of education, which allows to know the scope and limitations of this professional
practice; from the contrast of bibliographical contributions and the context reading of
formal basic and media education institutions.
The findings are mainly addressed to the identification of a lack of homogeneity on the
educational psychology, its definition, object, specificity, and place in the field of
education. It was found that debates around this topic have conditioned the current situation
of educational psychology as discipline and profession. In the city of Medellin specifically,
it was observed in a more detailed manner that factors enabling the work of the educational
psychologist come from the disciplinary area, with the above-mentioned issues, and from
the professional area by the specificities of the educational context. Then, there are factors
interfering in his work as the tension between the assigned role, the assumed role and the
possible role, the training, the chances of coverage, the applicationist and individualist
vision that educational psychology has, as well as the disciplinary and professional
relations established with other sciences of education.
