Summary
Aquatic macroinvertebrates have been widely used as bio-indicators of water quality because of their sensitivity to pollution and habitat alterations. Based on the above, the present designed to determine the possible relationships between the fauna of mayflies (Leptohyphidae) and water quality at various points in the basin of the river Alvarado study was developed. The community structure of associated Leptohyphidae different substrates (rock, litter, sand, gravel) in different altitudinal levels (551m to 1057m) were evaluated. Two samplings were conducted during two contrasting climatic periods, at high (December) and low rainfall (September) in nine sampling stations (5 along the river Alvarado and 4 in tributary streams of the basin). Parallel to the collection of biological material water samples were taken for in situ and ex situ phosphate, turbidity assessment, among other physicochemical variables. 1275 family Leptohyphidae bodies distributed in 3 genera, of which Tricorythodes had the highest relative abundance (47.37%), followed by Leptohyphes (46.12%) and Vacupernius (6.51%) were collected. A temporary level diversity and richness showed variability related to environmental parameters and precipitation for those months presented sampling. With respect to the substrates was found that gravel and litter were those with greater abundance of organisms in the two sampling periods, and the affinity of these genera in these habitats were determined to their distribution throughout the basin. The results of the physicochemical analysis showed a level of mineralization in some sections of the basin. The Leptohyphidae family is related to variables indicating human intervention such as biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and total coliforms. INTRODUCCI?N 12
