In recent decades, subjective well-being in childhood and adolescence has become the subject of intense attention by researchers in different countries. This has made it possible to document, with increasing clarity, its relationship with different areas of children's and adolescents' lives; within these, with their mental health (Möller, Heller and Paulus, 2007, Castaños and Sánchez, 2015).
In childhood and adolescence research in Subjective Wellbeing has aimed to understand its nature, evolution and main determinants; in relation to this last aspect, influences have been reported at different levels: individual, family and social. Regarding social influences, special attention has been given to the school system (Holte et al., 2015, García, Marande, Schneider and Blanchard, Garbarino, 2015, Kagitcibasi, 2015).
School is the natural context in which the development of children and adolescents takes place. As a social device, its functions include adding value to the competencies, abilities and characteristics of its students, considering their psychosocial reality of origin, but trying that this is not a fundamental determinant of their achievements (Murillo, 1996). In this sense, it is the ideal space for the implementation of initiatives that not only seek to add value in academics, but also in the sphere of the personal and, therefore, in the well-being perceived by the students (García, Marande, Schneider and Blanchard, 2015).
The present work sought to establish the differential effects of school variables on the Subjective Wellbeing of their students. The effect of the school climate, the type of methodologies used by teachers and the characteristics of the educational establishment in relation to its effect on adolescent subjective well-being was examined. To achieve this goal, a quantitative methodology and a multilevel analysis design were used, which allows analyzing individual variables considering the context in which people develop (Andreu, 2011), for this work, the school context.
The results indicate that there is a school effect on overall satisfaction with students' lives, which could be estimated at 5.9%. The most significant variable linked to the school to understand well-being is satisfaction with school and school climate. These indicate that more "subjective" dimensions such as the perception of the quality of relationships and of different aspects linked to life within the school community have a greater influence on the well-being of students than more "objective" aspects such as the quantity of students per teacher. In relation to these last aspects, it was observed that the largest educational establishments with the lowest percentage of suspended and priority students are those that appear to have the greatest positive effect on the overall satisfaction with the lives of their students.
It is expected that the results contribute to the knowledge of the relationship between school and well-being with the purpose of generating inputs for the implementation of interventions that contribute to the improvement of student welfare levels, with the positive consequences that this may have in different areas , including mental health.
