Resumen
The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of development level in fundamental motor skills on performance of a specialized skill. A total of 46 children, 9 and 10 years old, of both genders participated in the study. The groups were arranged according the level of development of two fundamental motor skills (throwing overhand and volley). The specialized skill of the Volleyball serve was assessed through of the movement pattern and accuracy to the target. The group with mature motor development level obtained higher mean in the initial position (t1,44=3.127, p=0.003), throwing of the ball (t1,44=2.599, p=0,013)
and in the ball attack (t1,44=2.489, p=0.017). In the total score of the serve pattern and in the precision score, the mature group also obtained better performance (t1,44=3,638, p=0.001 and t1,44=2,190, p=0,034, respectively). The regression analysis indicated that the level of development in the fundamental skills evaluated explains 36% of the serve variance, being that the components arm of the throwing and hands and arms of the volley have significant effects. These findings support the hypothesis of Seefeldt's proficiency barrier about the importance of fundamental motor skills to the development of sports-related skills.
