In science education, one of the approaches that has been highlighted is the teaching from STS themes. Research indicates that the STS approach can enhance students' engagement in studying science. However, there is no consensus in the literature about the contribution of STS teaching to the learning of scientific concepts. The objective of this study is to investigate whether this teaching perspective presents evidence that it contributes to the appropriation of scientific knowledge. For that, a STS didactic sequence was developed in two classes of adult education. We made video and audio recordings of the classes and at the end the students answered a written evaluation. Analysis of recordings and student responses allowed us to conclude that the STS education can contribute to the learning of scientific concepts, especially when this process occurs in a problematized way and using evidence.
