Resumen
This research seeks to analyze the effect of foreign direct investment (FDI) on
corruption, in addition to understanding whether it is conditioned by the level of
economic development of the countries. For this, panel data type information will
be used for 19 Latin American economies during the period 2002-2016, on an
annual basis. To carry out the estimations, the econometric technique of the
Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) is used in order to mitigate the possible
endogeneity problem. The results show a significant effect of FDI on corruption
and that FDI does not generate a unique effect on corruption, but rather that it is
conditioned to the level of economic development of each country. In less
developed economies, FDI will cause corruption, while in developed economies
the effect will be adverse.
