Resumen
This study aimed to characterize the epidemiological variables of mucopolysaccharidosis in Archidona canton, Napo province, in the 2017-2018 period. The type of research applied was descriptive, retrospective, cross-sectional, non-experimental, with the collection of data recorded in the clinical records of patients diagnosed with mucopolysaccharidoses resident in the Archidona canton with follow-up at the José Maria Velasco Ibarra Hospital. After the analysis, the affectation was found at different age groups, sex, risk factors, clinical features, and other fundamental aspects in the detection of this rare disease. Thanks to results obtained, it was evidenced that mucopolysaccharidosis type II and type IV prevail in Archidona Canton. Those were diagnosed by a characteristic clinic and analysis of urine samples with a determination of glucosaminoglycans, being dermatan sulfate the most frequent. Of the total cases, there was a slight predominance of this entity in male patients, with an age group between 20 and 29 years. It was observed that the consanguinity of the parents is the most representative factor for the appearance of MPS in Archidona Canton. As a recommendation, the creation of a comprehensive health care program for patients affected by this disease is suggested, which will guarantee a timely diagnosis and a better quality of life for these people.
