Resumen
Fe-Al-C alloys have excellent mechanical properties when produced by casting and casting and mechanical forming, such as hot extrusion. This work presents different processing routes to obtain a Fe-Al-C alloy by powder metallurgy. In this work, parameters were varied as feedstock and sintering atmosphere, maintaining the final proportion of 7% by mass of aluminum and sintering temperature of 1150 ºC. Quenching heat treatment was performed to evaluate the behavior of the material. A microstructure study was carried out using optical microscopy and Vickers microhardness to assess the microstructure obtained with the different processing routes. For comparison, powder metallurgy specimens containing only iron were produced, which served as a parameter of sintering quality. The processing routes resulted in samples with undesirable properties, such as oxidation, high porosity, expansion, and embrittlement. The microstructural analysis showed undiluted phases and the Vickers microhardness showed an increase of hardness about the iron bodies, but the hardness after the quenching did not improve considerably.
