Resumen
This study aims to design a battery energy storage system for application in a small-scale wind turbine system. It is presented the design methodology for the battery bank considering lead-acid batteries, the study of the influence of design variables on the total number of batteries, and the relationship of this number with different current ratings. The battery bank design, theoretically and numerically, aims to supply a residence with pre-established average energy consumption. To control the power flow, it is also designed a bidirectional dc-dc Buck/Boost converter, for charging and discharging the battery bank. The energy for charging the batteries is provided by the dc bus of the small-scale wind turbine conversion system. The design specifications of the converter are as follows: 1200 W at rated power, bus voltage of 250 V, battery bank voltage of 120 V, and a switching frequency of 50 kHz. The numerical results obtained are presented in order to validate the theoretical studies.
