Resumen
Glass ionomer cements are materials used in dentistry in restorations, cementations or lining. They are formed by a curing reaction between the inorganic glass particle and a polymeric acid. The sol-gel process is a synthesis route in which it is possible to produce vitreous materials by chemical reactions followed by a drying and densification process. Through the sol-gel process it is possible to produce glasses with excellent microstructural properties at low processing and sintering temperatures, as well as the elaboration of several chemical compositions that are not possible by the fusion process, which makes it an interesting route for glass synthesis for application in glass ionomer cements. The sol-gel process proved to be a synthesis route which allows the production of vitreous materials from the SiO2-Al2O3-CaO system. Despite the high cure time, the materials obtained proved to be glass ionomer cement builders, however, unlike expected, showed a microstructure with large clusters and heterogeneous morphology, factors which greatly increased the cure time and workability in the glass. cement preparation.
