The current project’s main goal is to analyze the academic performance and the curricular contents in the area of Mathematics in the students of the Unified General Baccalaureate (BGU), the National System of Leveling and Admission (SNNA) and the freshmen year in technical careers from the Universidad de Cuenca. In order to achieve this proposal, four steps were followed: the comparison of the curricular contents in the area of mathematics in the Unified General Baccalaureate (BGU), the National System of Leveling and Admission (SNNA) and the freshmen year in technical careers from the Universidad de Cuenca, the comparison of the academic performance of students belonging to the Unified General Baccalaureate who decide to enter technical careers, the leveling course on area 1 and the Universidad de Cuenca freshmen students from technical careers, the interpretation of the concordance of existing contents in each of the academic years at the university to determine the loosen and gaps during the learning process; and finally, the connection of the academic performance with the contents acquired in each educational level. Throughout this study, it was found that the contribution of the Unified General Baccalaureate (BGU) to the National System of Leveling and Admission (SNNA) in the Chemical Science Faculty is insignificant. Also, students from the Engineering Faculty presented a low academic performance and a high percentage of desertion and loss. Likewise, it was evidenced that there exists a lack of sequence in contents from the Unified General Baccalaureate (BGU), the leveling course, to the Chemical Science and Engineering Faculties. Finally, it was identified the need of a restructure in the curricular contents. To conclude, this project has demonstrated to be valid and transferable, becoming apt to be applied in the educational field.
