Objective: To determine the prevalence of cognitive impairment and associated factors in elderly retired social services of the Ecuadorian Institute of social security in Cuenca during the 2013 year.
Materials and Methods: A quantitative study of descriptive type of transversal cut will be realized. The sample will be aleatory probabilistic of 715 which one was obtained with a universe of 1667. For the calculation was used the 650 expected frequency, were added 10% of possible losses (65 retired), which means that the total sample was of 715 retired (n=715 retired), belonging to the help social services to the elderly citizens of the Social Security Institute of the city of Cuenca.
Results: The prevalence of CI is 35.4%. Among the factors associated with a statistically significant association was found: Age (p = 0.000), 60 -74 years 29%, 75-90 years 49.5%, > 90 years, a 100% of CI. Living in urban areas (p = 0.000) and not having smoked (p = 0.02) were protective factors against developing CI. Additionally diabetes constitutes a risk factor of 1.4 times to develop CI.
Conclusions: Our investigation suggests that the older have more risk of developing CI. We found that elderly that live into the urban area and did not smoke in the past have less risk to develop CI. Elderly with diabetes are greater risk of developing CI.
