Resumen
As a urban facility, cemeteries respond to the collective needs of a society. Besides being the assigned place for the rest of the dead, it represents the space where the living create a bond with the memory of their loved ones. In some cases, these sites reflect the culture, traditions and significances within the insights of a community.
After 77 years operating, the Municipal Cemetery of Giron faces serious problems of space, saturation and shortage of burial units, lack of maintenance, and a complex design of the public space.
Therefore, this preliminary project for the readjustment and enlargement of the cemetery started from the analysis of the conditions of the location and its urban relations; as a result of the interests of the Municipal Government of Girón with a previous approach to the phenomenon of death and its relation with the space and the city, which takes into consideration relevant case studies. This study proposes the inclusion of this facility as part of a network of social interaction spaces in urban planning, leaving behind the idea of an isolated, closed and residual space. The architectural project is aimed at recovering profitability by supplying enough burial space while solving design and accessibility problems through parameters of inclusive design, space efficiency, and the provision of green areas.
