Resumen
The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between hyperglycemia and frailty
syndrome in elderly in Geriatric of Guano Canton. A cross-sectional study of non-experimental
design, with a total population of 81 people older than 65, living in the geriatric center who met
the inclusion criteria requirements prior to informed consent. A questionnaire was applied
which included variables such as: the nutritional status measured with the Mini Nutritional
Assessment. Through the criteria of Fried fragility was measured. Additionally, samples of
blood glucose were taken. Results were analyzed according to descriptive statistics for each
variable and statistical test of significance in the relationship between variables: correlation tests
and Anova. It was found that 61.73% of the population study presented fragility and a
predominance of females. A 38.27% of fragile people presents a risk of poor nutrition. There is
no correlation between hyperglycemia and fragile syndrome, rejecting the hypothesis stated.
The syndrome of frailty in the elderly is present even when taking a normal nutritional status.
Nevertheless, this is demonstrated in accordance with the nutritional status deteriorates. It is
recommended to perform a record of glycemia, food habits, and life style to older adults in
order to obtain the most relevant data in next researches.
