By the time Spanish American Modernismo emerges on the world’s literary stage,
great developments of transportation and communication are in the throes of progress.
The travel biographies of prominent representatives of Modernismo alone demonstrate the
extent of human migration and the transfer of knowledge, data and goods at the end of
the nineteenth century. However, several modernist texts adopt a contradictory attitude
towards the increasing modernization of mobility and the acceleration of daily life. Thus,
El canto errante, appearing in Rubén Darío’s poetry collection of the same title (1907), not
only praises the rapid journeying by car (“en automóvil”) or train (“en tren”), but also
pines for the presumed authenticity of modes of travel belonging to the equestrian age.
This article, then, seeks to unveil the means by which certain works of Modernismo reveal
a compelling ambiguity between an emphatic identification with the modern age and a
reminiscent longing for the origin inherited from Romanticismo. Fil: Hahn, Kurt. Universidad de Graz; Austria.
