| dc.description.abstract | Objective: To describe the clinical, functional and radiological characteristics of a patient referred with a diagnosis of Swyer-James-MacLeod syndrome. Methods: A review of the follow up patients chart from the pediatric pulmonology ward of the Teaching Hospital of the Federal University of Minas Gerais; and the publicationscovering the last 20 years in MedLine and Lilacs, using Keyword Swyer-James-MacLeod, syndrome, pulmonary hyperlucent, bronchiolitis obliterans, child. Because of historical significance, we selected some articles from tre 50s and 80s. Results: This is an 11 year old patient, referred to us with a diagnosis of Swyer-James-MacLeod syndrome. At six months of age, he started wheezing and having recurrent respiratory infections. His X-ray showed left lung loss of volume associated with pulmonary hyperlucency. High-resolution CT scan showed signsof extensive involvement of large and small airways, very asymmetrical, most prominent in the left lung; atelectasis, associated with prominent and extensive bronchiectasis in the left lower lobe; and changes in the contralateral lung. Conclusions: The Swyer-James-MacLeod syndrome is a form of post-infectious bronchiolitis obliterans and was described 58 years ago as unilateral pulmonary hyperlucency, but thanks to advances in high-resolution CT scan technology we now know that the lesions are bilateral. | |
