Las representaciones masculinas en tres textos narrativos del grupo Los Contemporáneos

Abstract

This project came about because of my interest in studying the masculine representations in the text Novella como nube (Novel as cloud) by Gilberto Owen. However, it was discovered in the research that there are other novels by different authors who belong to the same group called Los Contemporáneos (the Contemporaries), who together made up a peculiar corpus in which different elements exist that are constant in the structure and diegesis. In these novels, masculine representations are studied because they contribute different elements with which masculine constructions at the beginning of the 20th century in Mexico can be analyzed. The study is about the way in which the central masculine characters are developed in the novels Margarita de niebla (Margarita of the fog) by Jaime Torres Bodet, Dama de corazones (Lady of hearts) by Xavier Villaurrutia and Novella como nube by Gilberto Owen. The study begins with the concept that Judith Butler proposes of gender as a cultural construction, in such a way that the types of masculinity in the text are analyzed from the cultural aspects that engendered them as male, Mexican, young, middle-class, and heterosexual, among other elements. The methodology begins with the concepts that are postulated from gender theory, such as the definitions of “gender”, “body”, “subjectivity” and “masculinity.” In the same way, the category “discourse” is studied in order to relate it to gender and to establish that through declarative voices, different ways of being men and women are produced and reproduced. In this case, it is in the literary texts where different ways of representing masculinity are observed.

Este proyecto surgió bajo el interés de estudiar las representaciones masculinas en el texto Novela como nube de Gilberto Owen, sin embargo en la investigación se descubrió que habían otras novelas de diferentes autores pertenecientes al mismo grupo denominado como Los Contemporáneos, juntas formaron un corpus peculiar ya que entre ellas existen diversos elementos que son constantes en la estructura y diégesis. En estas novelas se estudian las representaciones masculinas porque éstas aportan diferentes elementos con los cuales se puede analizar las construcciones masculinas de principios de siglo XX en México. El estudio trata sobre la forma en que son elaborados los personajes masculinos centrales de las novelas Margarita de niebla de Jaime Torres Bodet, Dama de corazones de Xavier Villaurrutia y Novela como nube de Gilberto Owen. En el estudio se parte del concepto que propone Judith Butler de género como una construcción cultural, de tal manera que las masculinidades en el texto se analizan desde los aspectos culturales que los engenerizan como varones, mexicanos, jóvenes, de clase media, heterosexuales entre otros elementos. La metodología parte de los conceptos que se postulan desde la teoría de género, tales como la definición de <<género>>, <<cuerpo>>, <<subjetividad>> y <<masculinidades>>. De igual forma se estudia la categoría <<discurso>> para relacionarla con el género y establecer que, por medio de las voces enunciativas, se producen y reproducen formas distintas de ser varones y mujeres, en este caso es en los textos literarios donde se observan diversas maneras de representar la masculinidad.
