Resumen
This paper presents the report of an experience developed with students of the third year
of High School in a public school of Canoas, located in the metropolitan region of Rio
Grande do Sul state. The purpose of this practice was to establish relations between the
elementary concepts and characterizations of polyhedral surfaces, so as to connect
theory and different types of packaging of the same product, the study of spatial
geometry. It was built a didactic sequence contemplating the investigation of the
advantages and disadvantages of changes in milk packaging, analyzing and critically
reflecting these changes. The methodology used in the research was the Mathematical
Modeling for it allowed a learning environment in which students had the opportunity to
carry out investigative work which established the relationship between mathematics
and reality. It is understood that, based on the investigation and reflection, it was
possible to build on with students the concepts of area and volume of prismatic solids in
a contextualized way, making them express their thoughts on this research and its
reflection. It is believed that students established relations between the shape of the
packing and the final cost and thus acquire necessary support for decisions, while
customers when purchasing products in relation to the choice of packaging.
