The medical cause of absenteeism affects workers globally, the company and society as each of them has a negative impact on economic development, so it is important to study this subject to further appropriate prevention and control.
Objective: To characterize the absenteeism by medical cause of a telecommunications company.
Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted from a database for disability recorded during the period between January 1 and June 30 of the years 2012, 2013 and 2014.
Results: During the evaluated period 243 disabilities which generated a total of 1.759 days lost were presented
The leading causes of absenteeism of medical origin for the studied periods were pathologiesassociated with the musculoskeletal system, such as back pain, lumbago, fractures and muscle injuries.
The rate of absenteeism (TGA) golbal for period presents a gradual increase from 13.79% in 2012to 20.90% in 2014.
Conclusions and recommendations: predominate during all the periods assessed disability less thanthree days, those generated in the workers charged tureen. The main causes of occupationalabsenteeism due to medical were pathologies associated with the musculoskeletal system, such asback pain, lumbago, fractures and muscle injuries.
The behavior of the global rates of absenteeism by general disease, industrial accident andoccupational disease merit that the company perform evaluations time and movements as well as theworkload assigned to its collaborators, in order to determine if these variables are determining theincrease in frequency and severity observed absenteeism in the present study.
