Absenteeism is a problem for the business economy and the society, the main causes are common source diseases. Total costs are difficult to quantify due to all the factors that influence it. Methodology: It was made a descriptive cross-sectional study to characterized absenteeism. Data source was taken from Colombian Telecommunications Company in the tertiary sector nationwide. The world population included workers in the middle of 2013 (3.647), and the population study was made up of disabled workers (889), people who had a disability from January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2013. Results: Common disease represented 1,097 (83.87%) of disabilities, 740 (83.24%) disabled people with 7,526 (57.28%) lost days. Women were the ones with higher number of disabilities, 63.3% (694). According to the classification of the ICD-10 diagnostic groups, the system that generated more lost days was musculoskeletal 13,40%. Ranked by single diagnosis the highest numbers of lost days was caused by mixed anxiety disorder and depression 4% (301). Workers who had five or more disabilities during the year, were 26 people (3.51%) who generated the 33,3% (2.506) lost days. Work accidents were not a major cause of absenteeism. Recommendations: To implement an absenteeism data collection system that feeds the absence database on systematic and continuous basis for the analysis of information in order to generate action plans. It is recommended to review the activities that the company has implemented to identify, assess, manage psychosocial risk factors; optimize the detection, improve early detection and prevention of muscle skeletal disorders. Last but not least, monitoring, evaluating and follow up workers who had more than five disabilities per year with an interdisciplinary group of health that allows implementing actions of promotion and prevention of health.
