| dc.description | Resumo: Para terminar meus trabalhos de doutorado, decidi voltar-me para o passado, em busca de sugestões que pudessem ajudar a compreender e solucionar os problemas mais urgentes de nosso tempo. No bojo do movimento progressista do século XX, chamou minha atenção uma corrente de pensamento político e social, que despontou na Europa, no período situado entre as duas guerras mundiais, e composta por intelectuais pertencentes a diversos países, acomunados pela mesma utopia democrática. Identifiquei em M. Adler, O. Bauer, H. J. Laski, G. D. H. Cole, R. H. Tawney, J. L. Fischer e K. Polanyi os principais membros dessa preciosa corrente. Decidi estudá-la, em diálogo com o pensamento de Karl Polanyi, hodiernamente o mais célebre dentre seus expoentes, a fim de delimitar o campo de compartilhamento de ideias e paixões utópicas. Por sua vez, o exame dessa corrente levou-me a aprofundar a análise da formação e do desenvolvimento do austromarxismo, que constituiu, no mesmo período, sua vertente austríaca e sua expressão política mais importante. A compreensão dos aspectos peculiares das atitudes e das ideias do movimento austromarxista me impôs o estudo das circunstâncias históricas específicas que condicionaram sua existência: da crise e da queda do Império dos Habsburgos, do surgimento e do desenvolvimento da Primeira República austríaca e da vitória final do fascismo, no contexto da transformação social dos anos 30. Por outro lado, a necessidade de proferir um juízo acerca dessa tendência intelectual e política me obrigou a considerar o fato de que as iniciativas e as discussões polêmicas que empreendeu foram determinadas, em ampla medida, pela mentalidade, pelos valores, pelas experiências, pelos contrastes e pela abordagem através dos quais se inseriu na luta política, enfrentando os problemas postos pela situação histórica da época. Essas pesquisas permitiram-me resgatar um específico aparelho de ideias, que me ajudou a traçar um balanço do desenvolvimento histórico dos últimos setenta anos. Depreendi que, hodiernamente, há uma crescente interdependência entre desenvolvimento da democracia, ampla difusão das informações relevantes para as escolhas públicas e fortalecimento da responsabilidade individual nas decisões coletivas, de um lado, e a possibilidade de enfrentar o avanço da degradação do meio ambiente e da qualidade e da segurança da vida humana, do outro. Mas não só. Inferi também que, não obstante isso, na atual conjuntura, predominam os traços hierárquicos, elitistas e "gerencialistas" do neoliberalismo corporativo, enquanto, paralelamente, os aspectos de liberdade, de igualdade e de responsabilidade, caros às forças democráticas, permanecem fatores politicamente recessivos. E cheguei à conclusão de que a tendência progressista precisa urgentemente voltar a fluir, inspirada por um projeto emancipatório novo e ambicioso: adaptado às condições atuais e locais do conflito social, por um lado, e definido no interior da trajetória traçada pelas tradições liberal, democrática e socialista que, no passado, lutaram em prol da individualização do sujeito social, por outro | |
| dc.description | Abstract: To finish my PhD work, I decided to go back to the past, looking for suggestions that could help understand and solve the most urgent problems of our time. In the midst of the progressive movement of the twentieth century, it caught my eye a stream of political and social thought, which emerged in Europe, during the period between the two World Wars, and made up of intellectuals from several different countries, gathered in the same democratic utopia. I found M. Adler, O. Bauer, H.J. Laski, G.D.H. Cole, R.H. Tawney, J.L. Fischer and K. Polanyi, to be the key members of this precious stream. I decided to study it in dialogue with the thought of Karl Polanyi, who is in our time the most famous among its exponents, in order to delimit the field of shared ideas and utopian passions. As a consequence, the examination of this stream of thought took me to deepen the analysis of the formation and development of Austromarxism, which occurred in the same period as it¿s Austrian side and it¿s most important political expression. The understanding of the peculiar aspects of the Austromarxism¿s attitudes and ideas imposed me the merge of specific historical circumstances that have conditioned its existence: the crisis and the fall of the Habsburg Empire, the emergence and development of the First Austrian Republic as well as the final victory of the Fascism in the context of social transformation of the 30¿s. On the other hand, the need to deliver a judgment about this intellectual and political trends has forced me to consider the fact that the initiatives and the controversial discussions undertaken were determined to a large extent by the mentality, the values, the experiences of contrasts and the approach through which this ideas participated on the political struggle, facing the problems posed by the historical situation of the time. These researches have enabled me to rescue a specific structure of ideas that helped me to trace a balance of the historical development of the last seventy years. In the present time, I realized that there is a growing interdependence between development of democracy, wide dissemination of relevant information to the public choices and strengthening of individual responsibility in collective decisions on the one hand, and the possibility of facing the advancement of environmental degradation and quality and safety of the human life on the other. But that¿s not all. Despite this aspect, I also concluded that, in the current conjuncture, the hierarchical traits, elitist and "managerialism" of the corporate neoliberalism dominate, while, in parallel, aspects of freedom, equality and responsibility remain politically recessive factors. I came to the conclusion that the progressive trend urgently needs to flow back again, inspired by an ambitious new emancipatory project: on the one hand adapted to current conditions and local social conflict and on the other set within the trajectory traced by the liberal, democratic and socialist traditions that in the past, fought for the sake of individualization of social subject | |
