The general objective of the research was to analyze a mechanism that silences the word through self-inflicted violence in young populations, proposing the assumption that silence, represented by the wound after self-injury, constitutes a primary mechanism for reducing the word, and that social intervention fails when ignoring the symbolic aspects of the phenomenon. From a qualitative-interpretative approach, based on a phenomenological perspective the research searched for recovering the symbolic weight in the social intervention, acknowledging the its signs and structure, identifying three central units of analysis: the young people, professionals and technicians in the world of face to face intervention and, the social work in his/her role as observer.El objetivo general de la investigación fue analizar un mecanismo de silenciamiento de la palabra a través de la violencia autoinfligida de jóvenes, instalando el supuesto de que el silencio, representado por la herida tras la autoagresión, se constituye en un primer mecanismo de reducción de la palabra y que la intervención social falla cuando ignora los aspectos simbólicos del fenómeno. Desde un enfoque cualitativo-interpretativo con perspectiva fenomenológica se buscó recuperar el peso de lo simbólico en las intervenciones sociales, conocer sus signos y construcción, identificando tres unidades de análisis centrales: los jóvenes, los profesionales y técnicos del mundo de la intervención directa y, el trabajador social en su rol de observador.
