Introduction: Green tea leaves (Camellia sinensis) contain flavonoids which have many different properties like antibacterial effect; on the other hand it is well known there is a big microbiota in the oral cavity, a part of this is in the saliva and dental plaque (etiological factor of dental caries and periodontal disease), in that way this research looks for determine the antibacterial effect of that plant on them. Objective: To determine the antibacterial effect of an Camellia sinensis infusion (green tea) used as a mouthwash, on dental plaque and saliva. Materials and methods: The infusion was prepared at 20 % w/v at 90 °C, it was applied to 84 high students (experimental group); others 84 students used saline solution (control group). The antibacterial effect was determined by recount of the forming units of colonies (UFC) in culture of dental plaque and saliva; collected before use of the infusion, immediately after and after 10 minutes. Results: It was found antibacterial effect of infusion in dental plaque as in saliva (p < 0.01); in addition the effect lasted until 10 minutes after use (p < 0.01). Conclusions: There was antibacterial effect of the green tea infusion in dental plaque and saliva immediately after and after 10 minutes of use.
