El efecto invernadero lo constituyen el 1% de los gases de la atmosfera (Gases Invernadero, GHG), entre los que se incluyen el CO2 y el metano, que, en su mayoría, son liberados por la industria, la agricultura, la ganadería y la combustión de combustibles fósiles. La captación de CO2 por los ecosistemas vegetales terrestres constituye un componente importante en el balance global de carbono. Teniendo esto en cuenta, la agricultura, aparte de ser un sector estratégico, se puede convertir en un mecanismo efectivo para mitigar el incremento del CO2 atmosférico. Por lo tanto, en este trabajo de investigación se ha determinado la tasa de captación de CO2 anual por los cultivos, basada en los datos de producción de biomasa y su contenido de carbono. Se ha calculado la captación de carbono por plantas individuales, teniendo en cuenta únicamente la biomasa anual. De esta forma, se ha estimado el carbono fijado total o el CO2. A esta alta capacidad de fijación de carbono (C) obtenida por la agricultura , hay que sumarle el uso creciente de buenas prácticas agronómicas que la mejorarán y optimizarán el balance.
