La siguiente tesis consiste en el estudio del área inundable de una sección del río Chicama ubicada en las progresivas 26+500 a 39+000, basándonos en el historial de caudales desde el año de 1971 a la primera mitad del 2017, con el apoyo de un software de modelación bidimensional de ríos llamado Hec-Ras, el cual usa algoritmos con bases en cálculos hidráulicos, hidrológicos, topográficos y otros factores como la n de Manning. En primer lugar se hace un estudio del comportamiento normal del río Chicama, a fin de determinar que áreas son las que normalmente inundan y cuáles son sus caudales en condiciones normales, en segundo lugar el análisis se enfoca en el fenómeno del niño costero, ocurrido en el año 2017, por lo cual se realizó un análisis mediante el uso de cuadros de frecuencia de Yevjevich, lo cual nos da una idea de cómo se comportó el rio en ese periodo de tiempo, además nos apoyamos en la elaboración de un hidrograma para el cálculo de caudal máximo, el cual fue usado como el caudal de diseño para ese periodo de tiempo, prosiguiendo con el estudio, se realizó una proyección de tres caudales hipotéticos mediante el uso de cálculo de diseño del método de Gumbel con tres periodos de retorno de 10, 50 y 100 años, dichos caudales y el empleo del software nos permitieron saber cuáles serían las área afectadas por dichos caudales, finalmente se realizó un análisis de los efectos que causan estas inundaciones, enfocándonos principalmente, en las áreas erosionadas, los cultivos perdidos y las toneladas de caña por hectárea que se perderían.
