El presente estudio evalúa las características de consumo de antimicrobianos en el servicio de Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos (UCI) del Hospital Nacional Edgardo Rebagliati Martins-Essalud durante los meses Enero – Junio 2008. Se realizó un estudio descriptivo, transversal retrospectivo de utilización de medicamentos, que incluyó a los pacientes hospitalizados en la Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos durante los meses de enero a junio del 2008. Se utilizó como unidad de medida el sistema de Dosis Diaria Definida (DDD), también recomendado por el DURG; bajo este sistema para cada ATM se define la dosis promedio diaria cuando se utiliza en su principal indicación. Se puedo observar que en el periodo de estudio, el Imipenem/cilastatina muestra el 28.37% de consumo total lo que equivale a 2708 viales dispensados, seguido de la Vancomicina con 16.19% equivalente a 1545 viales, mientras que el medicamento de menor uso es el Cefepime con 2.76%. Se observó también que el medicamento con mayor DDD es el Imipenem/cilastatina 17.16 DDD/100camas-día, seguido de vancomicina 9.77 DDD/100camas-día, Ceftriaxona 8.31 DDD/100camas-día, mientras que el medicamento de menor DDD es el Meropenem 1.47 DDD/100camas-día. De los resultados obtenidos se puede concluir que el antimicrobiano de mayor consumo es el Imipenem 17.16 DDD/100camas-día y el antimicrobiano de mayor costo 45% del gasto total en el periodo de tiempo
