Description of Course
In the era of data explosion, the collection and processing data become essential for the understanding of the
environment, human behavior, and economic development. This course is designed for students in Sustainable
Built Environments to advance their research and analytical skills using Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
The course covers GIS concepts, principles, and its applications in the built/urban environment through data
collection, analysis, and therefore informing sustainable design and planning.
Today, cities across the world are facing increasingly challenging issues such as climate change, social inequity,
natural disasters, and dwindling natural resources. This course exposes these critical issues to students, and
builds up students' analytical and synthesis capacity to tackle research questions using GIS.
