The search for identity in "The New York Trilogy" by Paul Auster and "Kindred" by Octavia E. Butler

Abstract

The purpose of our thesis is the literary analysis of two noveis: Kindred by Octavia E. Butier and The New York Trilogy by Paul Auster. Both writers are American and have been awarded prizes on numerous occasions. Among the most important awards given to Paul Auster are the "Prix France Culture de Littérature Étrangére" in 1989 for the work analyzed in our thesis and the Honorary doctor from the University of Lié ge in 2007. Octavia Butier has been distinguished for receiving awards such as the "MacArthur Foundation "Genius" Grant" in 1995 and for her most posthumous recognition given in the year 2010, the "Inductee Science Fiction Hall of Fame." Paul Auster includes themes such as transcendentalism, existentialism and the loss of language among others in his novels. This author has been characterized by his complex plots always using themes that mix chance and coincidence in a world governed by the absurd. Likewise, Octavia Butier has been characterized by nanating stories about dystopian societies where controversial themes such as: slavery, social differences and racism are raised. Her works are used to create conscience in her readers so that the exposed themes remain in the memory of the new generations.

El propósito de esta tesis es el análisis literario de dos novelas: Kindred de Octavia E. Butier y The New York Trilogy de Paul Auster. Ambos escritores son americanos y han sido premiados en numerosas oportunidades. Dentro de los más importantes galardones dados a Paul Auster están el "Prix France Culture de Littérature Étrangre" en 1989 por la obra analizada en nuestra tesis y el Premio "Honorary doctor" otorgado por la Universidad de Lige en 2007. De igual manera, Octavia Butier se ha destacado por recibir premios tales como el "MacArthur Foundation "Genius" Grant" en 1995 y por su más reciente reconocimiento póstumo dado en el año 2010, el "Inductee Science Fiction Hall of Fame." Paul Auster incluye temas tales como el trascendentalismo, el existencialismo y la pérdida del lenguaje entre otros en sus novelas. Este autor se ha caracterizado por sus complejas tramas usando siempre temas contingentes que mezclan el azar y la coincidencia en un mundo gobernado por lo absurdo. Del mismo modo, Octavia Butler se ha caracterizado por narrar historias sobre sociedades distópicas en donde se abordan temas controversiales tales como: la esclavitud, las diferencias sociales y el racismo. Sus obras suelen crear conciencia en sus lectores de tal manera de que los temas expuestos permanezcan en la memoria de las nuevas generaciones.
