El signo fotográfico. La relación semántica de la fotografía con la realidad

Abstract

La fotografía, a diferencia de otras prácticas visuales, tiene como principal función el registro de los acontecimientos debido al vínculo físico que establece con ellos. Sin embargo, la fotografía también crea discursos que la alejan de su función referencial desplazándose a terrenos más simbólicos. Su capacidad de actuar simultáneamente como huella, ícono y símbolo, ha tenido usos muy diferentes, lo que ha mantenido vivo el debate sobre su relación con el referente. A continuación, se propone una reflexión sobre el signo fotográfico y su vínculo con el referente según la función que se otorgue a la imagen.

Photography’s primary function, unlike that of other visual arts, is to record events, due to the close physical bond that exists between photographer and subject. Nevertheless, photography can also create narratives which distance it from its referential function and move it towards more symbolic realms. Given its ability to act simultaneously as icon, index and symbol, photography has been used in a variety of ways, keeping the debate about the relationship between signifier and signified very much alive. What follows is a reflection on the photographic sign and its relationship with the referent, depending on the image’s function.
