Resumen: El turismo se ha convertido en un factor vital para el desarrollo económico de Cuenca, Ecuador, generando empleos, ingresos y oportunidades de inversión en la región. Uno de los principales impulsores del turismo es su patrimonio cultural y arquitectónico, atrayendo a turistas interesados en la historia y la cultura de la región. El turismo en Cuenca representa alrededor del 10% del PIB de la ciudad y ha generado empleo para miles de personas, además de impulsar el desarrollo de infraestructuras turísticas. Sin embargo, la alta demanda de turistas ha generado problemas de congestión y contaminación en el centro histórico de la ciudad. Es importante que la ciudad planifique cuidadosamente el desarrollo del turismo para garantizar su sostenibilidad a largo plazo. La metodología de la investigación tiene un enfoque cuali – cuantitativo, descriptiva – exploratoria de corte transversal cuyo objetivo es determinar la importancia de la actividad turística y su aporte al desarrollo económico  de Cuenca, identificando sus principales atractivos y recursos turísticos, y evaluando su capacidad para atraer y retener a los visitantes. Además, se analiza la oferta turística existente en la ciudad, identificando las fortalezas y debilidades del sector. Se concluye que el turismo es una herramienta poderosa para mejorar la calidad de vida de una localidad, promoviendo la sostenibilidad y el cuidado del patrimonio cultural y natural, contribuyendo al desarrollo y bienestar de la localidad. El turismo es un factor clave para el desarrollo económico sostenible de Cuenca.Abstract: Tourism has become a vital factor for the economic development of Cuenca, Ecuador, generating jobs, income and investment opportunities in the region. One of the main drivers of tourism is its cultural and architectural heritage, attracting tourists interested in the history and culture of the region. Tourism in Cuenca represents around 10% of the city's GDP and has generated employment for thousands of people, in addition to promoting the development of tourism infrastructure. However, the high demand from tourists has generated congestion and pollution problems in the historic center of the city. It is important that the city carefully plan tourism development to ensure its long-term sustainability. The research had a qualitative - quantitative, descriptive - exploratory cross-sectional approach. This research analyzes the tourism potential of Cuenca, identifying its main tourist attractions and resources, and evaluating its ability to attract and retain visitors. In addition, the existing tourist offer in the city is analyzed, identifying the strengths and weaknesses of the tourism sector. In conclusion, tourism is a powerful tool to improve the quality of life of a town, promoting sustainability and care for the cultural and natural heritage, contributing to the development and well-being of the town. Tourism is a key factor for the sustainable economic development of Cuenca.
