The aim of this study is to collaborate with honduran Information Technology (IT) small and medium enterprises (SME) in order to improve their service competitiveness through a proposal of courses of actions that support the SME decision-making process to continue implementing outsourcing as part of their business strategy based on the analysis of outsourcing insertion on a sample of enterprises of the IT sector, located in the Distrito Central – Tegucigalpa. This study has identified the tendency of such enterprises towards outsourcing, the reasons that impact the decision-making process to use outsourcing, and the effects that it has generated on the business. This research had a qualitative approach, with a descriptive-explanatory scope and a non-experimental design, and the research data was collected from a selective sample of six case studies of SME members of the Honduran Information Technology Association (AHTI). From the results, it has been concluded that large enterprises generally decide to outsource strategically, and the SME of other sectors do not trust the outsourcing model. The reasons to opt for outsourcing were to focus on core business, flexibility, specialization, resources availability, service continuity, access to state-of-the-art technology, cost reduction, process optimization, and risk reduction, resulting in greater business productiveness and competitiveness. However, lack of control of the outsourced process was considered a disadvantage, and lack of customer outsourcing strategy, deficiencies on the contracting process, and lack of specialized and certified local human resources were outlined as obstacles. Nevertheless, overall, there are greater benefits than disadvantages, for which this sector’s intensive outsourcing recommends to any enterprise to outsource those activities out of the core business.
