Resumen
Objective: To estimate the prevalence of overweight in children aged from 9 to 12 years old and to verify this association with current eating habits and the period of breastfeeding.
Methods: This was a cross-sectional study, realized in public and private schools with students aged from 9 to 12 years old. The instruments were elaborated by the authors; they contained questions about breastfeeding and children's eating habits, as well as perinatal and demographic information. Those who the questionnaires duly completed were submitted to anthropometric measurements.
Results: A total of 271 students participated, most of them girls (51.3%), aged 11 years old (32.8%), enrolled in private institutions (62.0%). The mean time of exclusive breastfeeding was 4.9 months and total breastfeeding was 12 months. It was found a 42.8% prevalence of excessive weight. Only 1.1% of the participants were classified with adequate eating habits. The excessive weight in public institutions was higher than in private institutions and it was indirectly proportional to maternal schooling.
Conclusions: Adequate eating habits were associated with a higher total breastfeeding mean. The average score in the Healthy Habits Questionnaire was very similar, regardless of the participant's nutritional classification, and did not obtain a statistically significant difference. Reliable measurement of dietary intake is a challenge due to the limitations of the methods that evaluate this intake. A worrying prevalence of overweight and obesity was found, as well as an important inadequate consumption of sweets and ultraprocessed products, alerting the need for greater effectiveness of public policies.
