Resumen
BACKGROUND: The number of plastic surgeries is growing every year and the body contouring surgery comprises an important slice of these surgeries. Between the complications arising from these procedures, the surgical site infection is one of the most feared by plastic surgeons. The prophylaxis is the main tool in the fight against this complication, but the use of antibiotics in plastic surgery is still controversial. Despite the importance, few studies address this issue. METHOD: This is a controlled randomized prospective study, conducted in patients undergoing body contouring surgery, in tertiary hospitals, under general and spinal anesthesia, which were divided into two groups: (1) antibiotic prophylaxis only during surgery and (2) prophylaxis extended for two days. RESULTS: 31 patients were evaluated, of which 16 patients received prolonged prophylaxis and 15 received antibiotic only during the procedure. The overall infection rate was 6.4%, there was one case of infection in each group, and there were no statistically significant difference between the groups. CONCLUSIONS: We found equivalent incidence of surgical site infection among individuals who received and did not receive antibiotic prophylaxis. Aracaju-(SE) Aracaju-(SE)
