The positive association between periodontitis and lipid profile seems to be a reality. The present study aimed to investigate, in the existing literature, the possible relationship between periodontitis and lipid profile. A search was performed in the PubMed/MedLine database, using the following descriptors: “blood lipid level” and “periodontitis” allied to the “and” operator. Fifteen publications were selected that studied the relationship between periodontitis and serum lipid levels (LDL, HDL, Total Cholesterol and Triglycerides) and the possible mechanisms involved. The studies showed a relationship between dyslipidemia, obesity, worsening of periodontal parameters and the occurrence of periodontitis. Although the mechanisms involved are not yet fully understood, there seems to be a cyclical relationship between lipid levels, periodontitis, tissue response and systemic health. Inflammatory factors such as cytokines and C-reactive protein seem to mediate this process and are also related to the occurrence of cardiovascular diseases.A associação positiva entre periodontite e perfil lipídico parece ser uma realidade. O presente estudo teve como objetivo investigar, na literatura existente, qual a possível relação entre periodontite e perfil lipídico. Foi realizada uma busca, na base de dados PubMed/MedLine, utilizando os seguintes descritores: “blood lipid level” e “periodontitis” aliados ao operador “and”. Foram selecionadas 15 publicações que estudaram a relação entre periodontite e níveis séricos de lipídios (LDL, HDL, Colesterol Total e Triglicerídeos) e os possíveis mecanismos envolvidos. Os estudos apontaram uma relação entre dislipidemias, obesidade, agravamento de parâmetros periodontais e a ocorrência de periodontite. Embora os mecanismos envolvidos ainda não estejam completamente esclarecidos, parece existir relação cíclica entre níveis de lipídios, periodontite, resposta tecidual e saúde sistêmica. Fatores inflamatórios como as citocinas e Proteína C-reativa parecem mediar esse processo e também estão relacionados à ocorrência de doenças cardiovasculares.Aracaju
