This work aims to analyze the surrealistic traits in João Gilberto Noll’s Rastros do verão, which uses surrealistic techniques to read the postmodern world. The writer also uses the technique of the narrative discontinuity to juxtapose reality and dream. The narrator-character is filled by a feeling of deep annoyance for himself, revealed by misfitted, unbalanced actions. He represents the fragmenting of the postmodern individual, shown by Noll when he uses unnamed characters (the man, the boy, the woman, the girl, the father) to create a narrative of the “minimum I”, filled by a postmodern feeling of loss and direction and the loss of a “sense of the self” named by Hall (2006) as “identity crisis”, understanding identity not as unified, but decentered and dislocated, fragmented, and multiple. This work has the theoretical support of André Breton (2001), Maria João Simões (2006), Walter Benjamin (1994), Gerárd Durozoi and Bernard Lecherbonnier (1972), Antonio Candido (2001), J. Guinsburg and Sheila Leiner (2008) and Jacqueline Chénieux-Gendron (1992), aiming to reflect about the literary representation of dreams and the surrealistic traits present in the work in focus. To reflect on the hybrid, fluid and liquid aspect of João Gilberto Noll’s narrative we use Zygmunt Bauman’s theory and, to present the narrative discontinuity (dream and reality), the theories of Breton in Les vases communicants (1955).
