The globalization of the economy, the transformations in the national economic environment and, consequently, the increase of worldwide competition, have demanded that cooperatives review their strategies seeking to adapt to the new times. In this sense, the objective of this work is to analyze the competitiveness of the 50 largest cooperatives in the state of Minas Gerais. The Shift Share analysis was employed by varying the number of employees of the cooperatives and considering the activity sector and the region from 2009 to 2016. The national, structural and competitive effects were analyzed, as well as the homothetic and residual decomposition of each one of them. The study took into account the state of Minas Gerais, divided into 8 regions. The sectors of activity were represented by branches of Brazilian cooperatives that are present in the state ranking of the 50 largest cooperatives, considering the number of employees. The results indicate that the number of employees varied, in large part, due to the national effect, in other words, it followed the behavior of the Brazilian economy in the period.
