Samples of an Oxisol were callacted in Viçosa, MG, with four diferentt ground cavers, with the aim cf detemining moisture equivalent and for physical and cherrflcal characterization. The ground covers studied were: Pinus elliottii, Eucalyptus grandis, secundary forest and molasses grass (Melinis minutiflora Pal de Beauv): On the fem ground savers studied the soil exhibited the textural classification of clay, and the fine sandy fraction of the Pinus ground cover was increased, as a result of the large quamity of silica aceumulated under the litter. Soil organic matter content was lower finder Pines than in other ground covers due to slow rate of litter decomposition The higher values of potash were observed under secondary forest and molasses grass ground cover. The nutrient contents of the eucalypt litter were the lowest among the studied ground covers.
