Brazil is the third major corn producer in the world, however the yield is low. The low yield can be related to the incorrect nitrogen fertilization, mainly in no-tillage system. The Brazilian area under the no-tillage system is the second largest in the world. The dynamics of the nutrients in these areas, especially the nitrogen, requires careful use of fertilizer application techniques. The punch fertilizer applicator for after planting application is an alternative for improving the efficiency fertilizer usage. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of five openings of metering fertilizer unit (19.1; 15.0; 11.5; 8.0 and 5 mm), three angular speeds of the punch wheel (2.6; 4.3 and 6.1 rad s- 1) and three levels in the tank of fertilizer (40, 20 and 13.3 L), in the total mass applied by the metering device and in mass distributed for the delivering fertilizer system, in controlled conditions. Also, it was verified the influence of four ballasts (0, 25, 40 and 65 kg) in the depth of deposition of fertilizer, in the distance between holes and in the soil mobilization. The laboratory tests were lead in a completely randomized design in a factorial 5x3x3, and were performed in the Laboratory of Agricultural Mechanization (UFV). The filed tests were carried out in a completely randomized design and were performed in the Agricultural Mechanization Area of the Agricultural Engineering Department (UFV). Based on the obtained results was concluded that the fertilizer level in the tank did not have influence on the performance of the metering fertilizer unit and the delivery system. However, the angular speed of the punch wheel influenced in the total mass applied; therefore the metering fertilizer unit must be calibrated for the speed of work. It was verified that the excellent speed of operation is around 3,5 km h-1, which in most of the dosed mass was applied below of the soil surface. The performance of the fertilizer metering unit was satisfactory. In field conditions, it was also verified that the amount of ballasts added to the punch fertilizer machine had influence on the depth of fertilizer application and on the soil mobilization. This fact was not observed for the distance between the holes. With the ballast addition it was possible to reach the depth of fertilization of at least 5 cm, what minimizes the losses of nitrogen for volatilization. The soil mobilization, independent of the ballast addition, was considered low when compared with the furrows opening mechanisms used in the conventional applicator of fertilizer. The ballast addition could be used to control the depth of fertilization, without changing the distance between holes and without increasing the soil mobilization. These both conditions are important for the better efficiency of the no-tillage system. Fundação de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado de Minas Gerais
