In acid soils, with a pH lower than 5.0, the toxicity by aluminum (Al) results in reduced growth and development of plants that are not adapted to this acidity condition. Al 3+ cation, formed due to acid pH in contact with the plant cell, results in complex interactions with the cell wall and cytoplasm favoring the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). The biochemical and physiological responses of plants under the phytotoxic effect of Al are described in the post-germinative stage. For soybean culture there is a lack of information on the biochemical changes that may occur during germination and establishment of the seedling under the effect of this heavy metal. The main objective of this research is to identify the sensitivity to Al in 29 commercial soybean genotypes and to assess which biochemical changes occur at the germination stage and establishment of the seedling. The 29 genotypes evaluated show a reduction in germination, root growth and hypocotyl under the effect of Al. Among these, it is possible to identify genotypes more sensitive to the presence of Al. Due to the diversity of the genotypes studied, we selected five genotypes that showed difference in sensitivity to Al. The biochemical alterations show that the carbohydrate metabolism was reduced and the content of proline and nitrate increased under the effect of Al. The content of organic acids, fumarate and malate, increased in all genotypes evaluated. The MDA content was higher compared to the control treatment. The enzymes of the antioxidative metabolism obtained greater catalytic action to promote detoxification of EROs. The increase in malate concentration indicates that the Al tolerance mechanism in soybean culture promotes the formation of Al complex. The increase in proline content and catalytic activity of CAT and POX are biochemical traits responsive to the presence of Al during soybean germination. The biochemical changes observed are of fundamental importance for the improvement of soybean culture in environments with a high concentration of Al.
