In the highlands known as Altos de Arica, the north-south Andean foothills route is known as the Inca Road. Several authors(1) have made reference to sections of this road, but it is especially notable for its antiquity, which pre-dates Tawantinsuyo. This paper discusses the importance of this route in the foothills region of Arica, emphasizing the importance of the landscape in the road network and its relation to other routes that crossed the desert and to settlements associated with the road network.(2) En el altiplano conocido como Altos de Arica, la ruta del piedemonte andino norte-sur se conoce como Camino del Inca. Varios autores(1) han hecho referencia a tramos de este camino, pero destaca especialmente por su antigüedad, que es anterior al Tawantinsuyo. Este artículo discute la importancia de esta ruta en la región del piedemonte de Arica, enfatizando la importancia del paisaje en la red vial y su relación con otras rutas que atravesaron el desierto y con los asentamientos asociados a la red vial.(2)
