In this paper, we will present the theory of context models by Teun A. Van Dijk (1977, 2004, 2012). For this linguist, context is defined as a special kind of mental model of episodic memory. In the light of a sociocognitive approach, we seek to understand how linguistic expressions of discourse are formally represented in terms of contexts. We take the position that discourse processing requires a unique cognitive device capable of elucidating even invisible signs of the text. In order both to emphasize the importance of this theory for linguistic studies and to relate it to episodic memories, we will analyze three episodes of the life of the Holocaust survivor, Dr. Primo Levi (2015), in the book Auschwitz: testimonies 1945-1986. We conclude that context as a special type of mental model comes from the episodic memory of the speaker, as Van Dijk had presupposed.Neste artigo, apresentaremos a teoria dos modelos de contexto de Teun A. Van Dijk (1977, 2004, 2012). Para este linguista, o contexto é definido como um tipo especial de modelo mental da memória episódica. À luz de uma abordagem sociocognitiva, buscaremos compreender como as expressões linguísticas do discurso, em termos de contextos, são formalmente representadas. Assumimos a posição de que o processamento do discurso requer do falante um dispositivo cognitivo único capaz de elucidar até os sinais mais invisíveis do texto. Com o objetivo de realçar a importância desta teoria para os estudos linguísticos, analisaremos três episódios sobre a vida do sobrevivente do holocausto da Segunda Guerra Mundial, Dr. Primo Levi (2015), contados na obra Assim foi Auschwitz: testemunhos 1945-1986, com o intuito de relacionar a teoria dos modelos mentais com as memórias episódicas do holocausto. Concluímos que o contexto como um tipo especial de modelo mental é proveniente da memória episódica do falante, como Van Dijk havia pressuposto.
