The main objective of this article was to historicize the practice of scientific popularization. By using the theoretical foundation of Discourse Analysis, we analyzed different texts. In the beating between theory and analysis, we came up with the notion of demand discourse. This discourse seemed to justify the discourse of scientific popularization, indeed it built a demand of receiving information on the progress of science.O objetivo do trabalho foi historicizar a prática da divulgação científica. Utilizamos como fundamentação o arcabouço teórico da Análise do Discurso (AD), procedendo à análise de diferentes textualidades. No batimento entre teoria e análise, pudemos propor a noção de discurso da necessidade. Ressaltamos que tal discurso justifica o próprio discurso da divulgação científica, visto que o põe como necessidade do povo em receber informação sobre os avanços da ciência.
