categoria. This work presents a qualitative study on the routes of life, work and health of the workers
living from the recycling garbage coming from the Iguaba Grande and Rio das Ostras
“lixões” (inadequate waste deposals), as well as the ones from solid waste recycling plants
in Arraial do Cabo and Casimiro de Abreu, all of them, municipalities located in the Lake
Region in Rio de Janeiro State. This analysis is mainly based on the high number of
scavengers all over the country besides the public health problems derived from this type of
work. Opposing to the view which considers these people as socially excluded, this work
discuss this category as useful workers, being fundamental links of a recycling chain in our
country, although they are marginalized and not socially recognized. This research used as
main sources semi – structured interviews, in loco observation of this working process and
documental analysis of the previously mentioned towns. These investigated workers live
exclusion/insertion social processes throughout their life, work and health, which are
marked by vulnerabilities that mix this type of work precariousness and the fragilities of
social supports. This study problematizes the idea that the simple change from “lixões” to
recycling plants may substancially alter the precariousness of their working conditions and
points out the gender and health risk perception questions as important elements to be better
investigated in future researches on this workers’ health of this category.
